Diversity is the celebrated strength of the Alger Heights area. With African-Americans, Asians, Caucasians, Hispanic, and Native-American groups the area is unquestionably Grand Rapids' melting pot. And the combination of cultures is represented with pride in public art, local cuisine, and neighborhood businesses.
Located on the city's southwest side, the Alger Heights Neighborhood is generally defined by Eastern Avenue on the west, Kalamazoo on the east, Burton on the north, and 28th Street on the south.
Outstanding features such as Cheseboro Park, MacKay-Jaycees Park, Paris Park, Seymour Park. Alger Park Elementary School. Alger Heights Business District, and Seymour Square Business District make Alger Heights a great place to live, work and play.
The Alger Heights Neighborhood Association started as a successful neighborhood watch group in the late 1970s - rallying the neighborhood against a private softball complex that would have had a liquor license, and collecting 2,800 signatures on a petition causing the city to stop development.
Neighborhood residents helped raise money to create the MacKay/Grand Rapids Jaycees Family Park at the intersection of 28th Street and Kalamazoo Avenue, a free, public-access, liquor-free, multi-use nature preserve.
So come on in... take a look around... and find out a little more about us - you'll be glad you did!
